Coldwater senior Clay Schulze had a milestone day and nearly reached the final 10 bowlers as the United States High School Bowling Federation's national championships concluded at Columbus Square Palace Bowl in Columbus.
Clay Schulze, along with brother Andrew and other Cavaliers teammates Braylon Brown, Andrew Myers and Carter Miller, qualified along with Celina's Jacob Gross and Steven Stacy for the boys individual tournament after a long day of qualifying on Sunday
In the opening survivor round that trims the field from 180 to 60, Clay Schulze started with a 232 before throwing his first sanctioned perfect game in the middle game of the series before rolling a 202. Adding his games from Sunday, that put Schulze at 1,631 pints, good for ninth place and four pins behind teammate Myers, who went into the next round with 1,635. Brown was 50th with 1,519 pins to advance. Miller and Andrew Schulze did not advance, neither Gross and Stacy.
After two more games, the field was trimmed to 20, Clayton Schulze just missed reaching the top 10 by 2 pins, finishing 11th.
The Celina girls had one bowler make it through qualifying late Sunday night. Brynly Huber, who was unable to compete in the team competition as she was competing in the Miss Ohio Teen Pageant, bowled a 753 for 76th place, easily snaring a spot in the top 96 that advance to the survivor round. Teammates Chloe Bruce and Marissa Hole just missed qualifying. Bruce bowled a 724, four pins out of the 96th spot for 100th place with Hole bowling a 722.
Huber was unable to move into the top 40 to secure a spot in the second round.
