A severe thunderstorm with straight-line winds rocked Celina late Thursday afternoon, downing several large trees at the Mercer County Fairgrounds and causing power outages in the southeast and west portions of the city.
According to Mike Ryan, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Wilmington, wind speeds from the storm reached 60-65 miles per hour. [More]

Bertha McCrary has been attending the Mercer County Fair for the past 70-plus years and remains a steadfast contributor to its exhibits and competitions. She also helps out by setting up the fair's flower show and wherever else the fair board may need her assistance.

Mercer County may be getting new plat books.
Mercer County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) board members during a meeting Thursday authorized district administrator/education specialist Nikki Hawk to look into publishing and selling new plat books to county residents.
The first recorded Perseid meteor shower was in 36 AD when a Chinese diarist wrote that "more than 100 meteors flew thither in the morning." Once more Perseids are expected to fly thither at their peak of up to 80 meteors per hour on Sunday night.
A swarm of honeybees decided to spend some respite time at my home last week and it was more than a little unnerving.
By the time the bees clustered together on a nearby tree branch, the winged insects resembled an overgrown football. Only it was alive.
