Rev. Gary Scherer
Rev. Gary Scherer, C.PP.S, 73, died at 11:30 a.m. July 6, 2012, at St. Charles Center, Carthagena.
He was born Jan. 3, 1939, in Portsmouth to John and Ruth Seyfried Scherer.
Surviving are six sisters, Carol (Thomas) Peckham, Grass Lake, Mich., Donna (Arthur) Pickelheimer, Columbus, Sue (Randy) Burnside, Jeffersonville, Diane (Greg) Lodwick, Portsmouth, Lynne (Curt) Webb, Wheelersburg, and Ann Bartlett, Portsmouth; seven brothers, Raymond (Pat), Galt, Calif., Joe (Carol), Boiling Springs, S.C., David (Alice), Portsmouth, Daniel (Debbie), Atlanta, Dean (Gale), Columbus and Richard and Mark, both of Portsmouth; and a sister-in-law, Linda Scherer.
Deceased are two brothers, Roger and Jimmy, and a sister, Sandra.
He served as an assistant pastor at St. Joseph Church in Wapakoneta from 1967 to 1970, a chaplain at Holy Name Hospital in Cincinnati from 1970 to 1981 and a chaplain at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Dayton for 20 years.
In 2000, he was named parochial vicar of St. John the Baptist Church in Whiting, Ind., where he served until ill health forced his retirement in 2010.
Funeral Mass is 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Center, the Rev. Larry Hemmelgarn, C.PP.S, officiating. The Rev. Thomas Beischel, C.PP.S., will be the homilist. Burial will follow in the community cemetery.
Calling is 1-5 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at St. Charles. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Missionaries of the Precious Blood.
