Vernon Barhorst
Vernon W. Barhorst, 86, Minster, died Sept. 28, 2012, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home, Minster.
He was born Apr. 30, 1926, in Fort Loramie, to Frank and Elizabeth Ernst Barhorst. On Nov. 19, 1949, he married Treva Zimmerman, who survives.
Also surviving are seven children, V. Glen (Jeanne) Barhorst, Anna, Randall (Denise) Barhorst, Newport, Mark (Vicki) Barhorst, Fort Loramie, Elaine (Jay) Sargeant, Sidney, Theresa (John) Buschur, Anna, Lori Hausfeld, Springboro, and Mitchell (Jill) Barhorst, Minster; a sister, Ida Thobe, Fort Recovery; sisters and brothers-in-law, Romilda Barhorst, Englewood, Matt (Doris Jean) Zimmerman, Fort Loramie, Annette (Dave) Haraburda, Chicago, Lillian Zimmerman, Minster, and Edna Zimmerman, Troy; sixteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Deceased are two infant daughters, Peggy and Jane Barhorst; five siblings, Esther Miller, Vera Meyer, Dorothy Miller, and Victor and Richard Barhorst; a son-in-law, Tom Hausfeld; and a granddaughter, Kacie Hausfeld.
He graduated from Fort Loramie High School in 1944 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Japan and the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He retired as an insurance agent and also owned and operated the former Newport Fruit Market.
He attended St. Augustine Catholic Church, Minster, and was a past member of Sts. Peter and Paul, Newport. He also belonged to the Fort Loramie American Legion Post #355 and the Fort Loramie Booster Club.
Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church, the Rev. Rick Nieberding presiding. Burial with full military honors will follow at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Newport.
Calling is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and 9-9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Gehret Funeral Home, Fort Loramie.
Memorials may be given to the Kacie and Thomas Hausfeld Memorial Scholarship Fund or any charity of the donor's choice.
