Thomas Hemmelgarn
Thomas N. "Tom" Hemmelgarn, 85, Fort Recovery, Ohio, died on May 12, 2017, at the Hospice of Miami County, Troy, Ohio.
He was born September 2, 1931, in New Weston, OH, to the late Clemens and Juliana (Saalman) Hemmelgarn. On November 13, 1956, he married the late Delores "Dolly" (Siefring) Hemmelgarn, who died May 4, 2017.
Surviving are five children, Tom J. Hemmelgarn of Chatsworth, Georgia, Jim (Teresa) Hemmelgarn of Sidney, OH, Joe Hemmelgarn of St. Marys, OH, Jean (Danny) McHugh of Lewis Center, OH and Tony (Kimberly) Hemmelgarn of Wichita, Kansas; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three siblings, Marlene Knapke of Coldwater, OH, Dave (Georgia) Hemmelgarn of Lewisburg, OH and Bill (Mary) Hemmelgarn of Portland, IN; sister-in-law, Nancy Hemmelgarn of Chicago, IL; in-laws, Pauline (Leo) Kunk of Tucson, AZ, Willie (Monica) Siefring of Louisville, KY, Barb Winner of Osgood, OH, Pauline Siefring of Decatur, IN, Ruth Siefring of St. Marys, OH and Marjorie Siefring of Powell, OH.
Also preceding him in death are an infant son, Joseph Hemmelgarn; brother, Larry Hemmelgarn; brother-in-law, Jerry Knapke, in-laws, Larry (Joy) Siefring, Laurena (Webb) Frilling, Mary (Lloyd) Heitkamp, Harold Siefring, Paul Siefring, John Siefring, Virgil Bergman and Gene Winner.
He was a graduate of St. Henry High School and served in the US Air Force during the Korean War in Japan and Okinawa. Tom worked in the accounting department at the former Avco New Idea, Coldwater, OH and was a farmer.
He was a former commander and member of the American Legion, Osgood, OH, and is currently a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Coldwater, OH and the American Legion, Fort Recovery. Tom served on the honor guard of all three of the military posts.
He served as a volunteer for the Center for Neurological Development, Burkettsville, OH, was a 4-H advisor for the St. Henry 4-H Club and was a former member of the Mercer County Fair Board. Tom was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, Burkettsville, Ohio and the church's Holy Name Society.
Tom enjoyed ballroom dancing with his wife, "Dolly" at the various area dance halls. He also enjoyed playing cards with the poker club, bowling and spending time outdoors.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Burkettsville, Ohio, with Fr. Tom Hemm officiating. Burial will follow at St. Bernard Cemetery.
Calling is 3:00 pm-8:00 pm Tuesday and 9:00 am-9:45 am Wednesday at Brockman-Boeckman Funeral Home, Fort Recovery, Ohio. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the American Legion, Fort Recovery.
