Alice M. Hellwarth, age 95, passed away December 24, 2021, in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, where she had lived since 2017.
Born September 21, 1926, in Toledo Ohio, Alice was the only child of Edward K. Gaumer and Eldiva F. (Thompson) VanHorn. Alice and George E. Hellwarth were united in marriage on July 19, 1952. He preceded her in death February 4, 1995.
Also preceding her in death were her brothers & sisters-in-law: Margaret & Floyd Deitsch, John F. & Martha Jane Hellwarth and Mary & Keith Kingsley. She is survived by her son, daughter-in-law, and grandson: Mark Hellwarth, Laura Kystad Hellwarth, and Joseph Hellwarth, of Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan. Also surviving are nieces & nephews: Kathy Deitsch (Lisa Faust) of Celina, Teala Hellwarth of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Susan Hellwarth (Dan) Miller of Delaware, Ohio, and John S. (Mary Jo) Hellwarth of Celina, and many beloved great nieces and great nephews and their families.
Alice spent most of her youth in Urbana, Ohio, with her father and her aunts. She graduated from Urbana High School in 1944. Alice received a Bachelor's of Education Degree from The Ohio State University in the spring of 1948, and her Master's of Education in 1973, from The University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne. In the fall of 1948, Alice began her 40 year career in education at Celina High School. She taught English, Spanish, and Speech. Alice eventually was named head of the Foreign Language Department, and retired in June of 1988. After retirement, Alice spent her winters in Naples, Florida, and summers back in Celina. She was a very talented piano and organ player. Alice was an avid reader, and was interested in Mexican history and culture, and loved traveling and seeing historic sites, especially those in Mexico. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Celina and the Shepherd of the Glades Lutheran Church in Naples, and a member of the choir at both churches, and would occasionally play the organ.
Due to COVID concerns, a private interment was held January 15th, 2022, at North Grove Cemetery in Celina, with Pastor Jeff Gramza presiding over the Graveside Rites.
A Celebration of Life for friends and family will be held later this Spring or Summer.
Memorial Contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
