Esther Whitacre
Esther F. Whitacre, 84, 422 Reed St., Portland, Ind., died at 2:08 p.m. May 20, 2008, at Persimmon Ridge Healthcare, Portland, Ind.
She was born in Jay County, Ind., on May 17, 1924, to Walter and Florentine Miller Loy. On Dec. 29, 1942, she married Joseph F. Whitacre, who died June 10, 2007.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph (Donna), Fort Recovery, and Robert (Barbara), Palmetto, Fla.; a daughter Brenda (Rex) Ehrhart, Portland; a brother, Harold Loy, Arcola, Ill.; a sister, Edna (Arthur) Garringer, Indianapolis, Ind.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She worked for Naas Foods for more than 30 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Portland, and its Rosary Sodality, the Portland Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Portland Moose Lodge.
Funeral Mass is 10 a.m Saturday at the church, the Rev. Robert Moran officiating. Burial is at Green Park Cemetery, Portland.
Calling is 3-7 p.m. Friday at Baird-Freeman Funeral Home, Portland.
